Timber mafia’s ”brazen defiance” brought to Nishank’s notice

Aligarh, Jul 16 (PTI) Environmental groups have written a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank drawing his attention to the “brazen defiance” of the timber mafia in the hill state after alleged attempts to murder an activist and his family. President of the Himalayan Chipko foundation J B Dabral has said in the memorandum that despite several requests for police protection, Shiv Prasad, an activist with the NGO, and his pregnant wife were victims of a murderous attack on July 10 allegedly by the timber mafia.

Prasad”s pregnant wife is battling for life at a hospital in Kotdwar town after goons attacked the couple and their children near village Debikhet in Pauri Garhwal district. Despite efforts of some environmental groups even an FIR has still not been registered because of the political patronage enjoyed by the timber mafia, the memorandum said. [more]
